Course Description

Course summary

Parent education programs are defined as educational programs that help parents play a more active role in the development of their children, spend more quality time with their children, establish healthier relationships and develop parenting skills. With the prepared parental training courses, it is thought that parents can maintain a more sensitive relationship with their children and increase parent-child communication.


Course definition

The preschool stage is a critical stage in which children can maximize their potential and learn new information.   This phase is important as the development of children is very fast and it has a significant role in shaping their personality. In particular, during this phase, healthy relationships with the parents affect the relationships that children establish outside of the home.  When it is considered that children receive their first training from their parents, it is evident that parents must develop their parenting skills, which is important for the physical, mental, social, and emotional development of the child. The aims of family training programs are to support parents in child training and development, to enable them to learn the correct approach and establish appropriate communication with their children. The main aim of this course is to strengthen parent-child interaction.


Learning outcomes

  • Parents will learn how to support the various areas of development (mental, physical, social, and emotional) of their child,
  • They will realize the parents' effects on their children,
  • They will know the obstacles to communication,
  • They will learn that effective communication can be enabled by considering mutual needs,
  • They will learn the methods of effective communication with their child,
  • They will learn to recognize their emotions and will understand anger control methods as well as how they can be applied,
  • They will learn the skills necessary to spend quality time with their child.


Target audience

Parents with children aged 3-6.


Why should participants choose this course?

Parents must be educated in order to learn the art of parenting for children, who are the most valuable assets of the future and society, to develop the interaction and communication skills of parents and children, and to raise self-confident and compassionate children.

She was born on April 15, 1987, in Nicosia. She graduated from the 20 July Science High School in the 2003-2004 academic year. In 2010, she graduated from the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of Eastern Mediterranean University. She completed her master's degree in education in the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counselling of the Near East University Institute of Educational Sciences in 2013 and then completed her doctoral degree in the same department in 2019. Yasemin Sorakın has contributed to various social responsibility projects since 2015 and has given many seminars and trainings, especially on parent education and peer bullying. Yasemin Sorakın, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the Social Research and Development Centre affiliated to Near East University, works as a lecturer in the Department of Guidance and Psychological Counselling within the Atatürk Education Faculty of Near East University. Additionally, she works as the person in charge of the Common Elective Courses of the Near East University Common Courses Coordination Unit. As well as her studies on psychological counseling and guidance, developmental psychology, loneliness in adolescents, parental education, and peer bullying, she has presented papers at both national and international conferences, indexed articles, and a book chapter. She is married with one child.
