Course summary

This Bitcoin & Blockchain course is a foundation module that provides a brief summary and technical answers to several relevant questions. It introduces the main concepts behind bitcoin and provides the audience with a sufficient level of detail to realize the need for blockchain technology in it. It sheds light on up-to-date research aspects and new innovations in the used communication protocols and security algorithms. Moreover, it emphasizes the main vision and its future prospects.


Course description

Bitcoin is a digital currency (or Cryptocurrency) created in 2009 following the housing market crash. It offers lower transaction fees than even traditional online payment mechanisms and is operated by a decentralized authority, unlike government-issued currency. However, the key challenges here are indeed the connectivity, trust, and security-related aspects. Accordingly, a new emerging technology, the Blockchain, has been employed. This Bitcoin & Blockchain course is a foundation module that provides a brief summary and technical answers to several relevant questions. It introduces the main concepts behind bitcoin and provides the audience with a sufficient level of detail to realize the need for blockchain technology in it. The advanced submodules of this course will provide the audience with a much greater depth of understanding and more practical experience in each subject area.

Prof. Dr. Fadi Al-Turjman received his Ph.D. in computer science from Queen’s University, Canada, in 2011. He is a professor and a research center director at Near East University, Nicosia. He is a leading authority in the areas of smart/intelligent systems in the IoT era. His publication history spans over 250 publications in journals, conferences, patents, books, and book chapters, in addition to numerous keynotes and plenary talks at flagship venues. He has authored and edited more than 25 books about cognition, security, and WSNs deployments in smart environments. He has received several recognitions and best papers’ awards at top venues. He also received the prestigious Best Research Paper Award from Elsevier Computer Communications Journal. Currently, he serves as an associate editor and the lead guest editor for several well-reputed journals, including the IEEE Communications Surveys and Tutorials (IF 23.07) and the Elsevier Sustainable Cities and Society (IF 5.6).
